Regular tuning and maintenance of pianos or is a must. For example, because the greatest culprit for an out-of-tune piano is humidity and temperature changes. Changes in humidity affect all pianos, whether they are being played or left untouched in a corner. For example, during the winter, pianos tend to go flat with dry heat. In the spring, once the heat is turned off, there is more moisture in the air, so the humidity levels change. The soundboard in pianos absorbs this moisture, expanding and causing pianos to go sharp by the summer. These seasonal changes in piano tuning are most obvious in the mid-range.
How important is tuning to a performance? Pianos used in concerts are tuned before every performance. A piano in a professional recording studio is tuned three to four times every week to keep it sounding its best. For homeowners of pianos, we recommend at least two tunings each year to keep their pianos in tune.
Beyond humidity, the other culprits which negatively affect the tune of your pianos include fluctuations in room temperature, direct heat or stage lights, which may cause rapid changes in tuning.
Pianos may also go flat faster when there are new strings, as new music wire is quite elastic. This is why new pianos and restrung pianos have to be tuned more during their first year. In addition, slipping tuning pins can also cause pianos to go flat. Older pianos that have been exposed to many seasons often have loose tuning pins and as a result, have poor tuning stability.
Finally, like to pound out hearty tunes on your pianos? The louder and more often you play pianos, the faster they go out of tune. The force of a hammer repeatedly hitting a string can affect the equalization of tension along the string's length, and cause its pitch to be slightly altered.
