To further complicate matters, dust and stains can cause a lot of damage to your piano, whether it is an upright piano or a baby grand. Opening your piano and trying to clean the inside yourself is NOT recommended.
Heed these DON'Ts:
-
Never clean your piano with a glass cleaner, soap or synthetic stain remover. Harsh chemicals and sprays will only damage the delicate parts of your piano, particularly the keys, making your piano look worse. Do dust it frequently with a feather duster, then wipe the outside with a soft, damp cotton cloth, wiping in the direction of the grain. Then, wipe up any excess moisture with a similar dry cloth. Do the same thing for the keys, but be sure to use separate cloths for the white and black keys. If a more thorough polishing is required, contact the Piano Man at info@thepianomaninc.com.
-
Do not open a piano and try to clean it yourself as you can disturb the settings and alignment of parts. Pianos are mostly hand crafted, which involves assembling several parts together. Get a regular tuning twice a year. Ask the piano technician to do a minor “touch-up” with each tuning. This will prevent unnecessary breakage and wear and tear.
-
Do not scrape the keys on your own. When our cleaning experts clean your piano, we often have to scrape the keys. In order to safely clean your piano, call us for rates on professional cleaning services.
